Randall Romano's Presentation Topic
Documentary Street Photography
Presentation Description:
Street photography has recently had a renaissance. More and more people are discovering the challenges and rewards of making images in urban areas. Yet, the challenges of capturing good street photography are huge. Life and interactions on the street move quickly, changing in a second. The ability to capture street life requires quick reflexes, the ability to get close to subjects and a competence to anticipate interactions.
Making successful images requires dedication, focus and consistency to succeed. All the skills and abilities one develops as a photographer are necessary to make truly significant images. The lure of street photography is this necessary mix of technical prowess, combined with the potential to make something really significant and unique.
Documentary Street Photography was developed because of my own passion for street photography over the past five years. The program is a teaching program utilizing photographs from master street photographers, both classic and modern, as well as my own photographs from the past few years on the street. The goal is to best illustrate the teaching points with excellent photography.
Topics covered include:
• Definition of street photography • Types of street photography • Legalities of Street Photography in a Canadian Context • 14 Essential Street Techniques that will help you succeed on the street. Examples of these include: Embracing Spontaneity, Gestures/Emotions, Boldness/Getting Close, Storytelling, Camera Angles, Black and White Versus Colour and Creating Layers. • 8 different Subjects to consider with Street Photography. Examples of these include, Shadows/Contrast, Humorous Juxtaposition, Use of Colour, Reflections, Gathering Places, Urban Architecture/Objects, and Going Beyond People. • Editing Techniques • Beyond Perfection •
Bio:
Photography has been a big part of my life since I was sixteen and the camera has been a way of seeing, understanding and connecting to the world. The camera’s ability to capture fragments of time has allowed me to see the world in unique perspectives, creating many compositional puzzles to solve and to create intriguing stories. My photographic vision sees the world from two different and equally important perspectives, a fast-paced documentary style that captures moments of people and daily events as they unfold, and secondly a more slow-paced connection, basking in the beauty of nature and slowly making careful compositions of expressive beauty. Both these visions offer a diversity of subject matter, one of what I believe is a superpower of the camera. An abundance of subject genres all requiring different skill sets. My photography career has stretched from the early 1980s with a variety of editorial and commercial clients, under the name Turtle Pond Photography. Since 2015, I have concentrated primarily on personal documentary projects, finding traction with historical and documentary street photography, as well as connecting with the vast landscapes and cityscapes of Canada. It has been equally important connecting with a wide range of photographers, teaching workshops and courses. This allows me the joy of giving back the photographic knowledge learned along the way. My photographs can be attributed to a persistence, but also to the helpful and true advice learned from many kind and generous photographers who have taken the time to critique my work and push me in the right direction.
Presenting Experience:
My main goal in presentations is to provide an interactive experience with the audience, as well as providing a range of interesting content. Since 2015 I have presented two different photography related programs to a variety of different photography clubs in Ontario. The programs delivered were: Effectual Photography and Creating Meaningful Photographs. I am also trained in presenting skills by being past president of a Toastmaster Club in Peterborough. My goal is to present a fast-paced interesting presentation that teaches valuable skills to your club members.
